Helen Hunt Housing
Multifamily
Colorado Springs, CO
The Hunt Campus Multifamily Housing Conversion is a completed adaptive reuse project that transforms a historic 1901 school building into a vibrant residential community. This initiative responds to the urgent need for transitional housing in El Paso County, where many families face housing insecurity and homelessness. Today, the campus offers 24 thoughtfully designed apartment units, including studios, one- bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom layouts. Flexible configurations allow studios to interconnect, creating two-bedroom units when needed, ensuring adaptability for families of different sizes.
More than just housing, the Hunt Campus provides a holistic support system. Residents have access to wraparound services such as case management, employment assistance, and family-focused programs. Partnerships with organizations like CPCD Head Start and Shandy Clinic bring educational and therapeutic resources directly to the campus, helping families build stability and thrive.
Preserving the historic character of the Hunt Campus was central to the design approach. Compass TDG Architecture carefully integrated modern amenities while honoring the building’s original architectural details, creating a space that reflects both heritage and progress. This project revitalizes the Hillside neighborhood, strengthens community ties, and offers dignity and hope to families transitioning out of homelessness. Since completion, the Hunt Campus has helped dozens of families move from crisis to stability, reducing shelter stays and increasing access to employment and permanent housing. It stands as a model for how adaptive reuse can address critical social needs while celebrating historic preservation.
